Gewürztraminer

April 6, 2025

Gewürztraminer is a distinctive aromatic white grape variety primarily associated with the Alsace region of France, though it is also grown in Germany, Italy (as Traminer Aromatico), Austria, and parts of the New World. The name “Gewürz” means “spice” in German, referring to the grape’s intensely perfumed character. This grape is known for producing highly expressive wines that range from dry to sweet and often have high alcohol and low acidity.

Flavor

Gewürztraminer wines are intensely aromatic, with prominent notes of lychee, rose petals, tropical fruits, and exotic spices like ginger and clove. On the palate, they tend to be full-bodied and rich, with a creamy texture and a long, floral finish. Some versions may also display a touch of residual sugar.

Food Pairing

Gewürztraminer pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai or Indian dishes, as well as rich cheeses like Munster and blue cheese. It also complements roasted poultry, foie gras, and fruit-based desserts thanks to its fragrant and sometimes off-dry profile.
