Cooking time:
1 hour
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ pounds potatoes
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- ¾ tsp ground cumin
- ¾ tsp chili powder, plus more for dusting
- 2 tsp ghee or unsalted butter
- 1 large yellow onion, minced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1 pound lean ground turkey
- ¾ cup tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro, plus more for garnish (optional)
- 1 red chile pepper, seeded and minced
- ¾ cup frozen peas
- salt
Recipe:
1. Boil potatoes with 1 tbsp salt until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, return to saucepan, and mash with sour cream, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp turmeric, ¼ tsp garam masala, ¼ tsp cumin, and ¼ tsp chili powder. Set aside.
2. In a large nonstick skillet, heat ghee over medium heat. Cook onion until golden, 7 minutes. Add garlic and ginger, cooking until fragrant, about 1 minute.
3. Add ground turkey and 1 tsp salt. Brown the meat, breaking it into small pieces, for 5 minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, ¼ cup water, cilantro, chili pepper, ¾ tsp garam masala, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp chili powder, and ½ tsp turmeric. Cover and cook on low for 20 minutes. Stir in frozen peas and cook for 5 more minutes.
4. Spread the meat mixture in an 8-inch baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading to cover. Run a fork across the top for texture and sprinkle with chili powder.
5. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake pie on a sheet pan for 25 minutes. Broil on high for 2 minutes to finish. Optionally, garnish with cilantro.
