Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried yellow or green peas
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil
  • Optional: 3 strips bacon or 1 smoked sausage, chopped
  • Pepper, to taste

Pea Porridge recipe

Recipe:

  1. Rinse and soak the dried peas overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  2. Drain and place in a pot with 4 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until soft and mushy, stirring occasionally.
  3. If using bacon or sausage, fry it in a pan until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, sauté chopped onion in butter or oil until golden.
  5. When peas are cooked, mash them with a spoon or blend slightly for creaminess.
  6. Add salt, pepper, sautéed onions, and optional meat to the porridge. Stir well.
