Gamay

June 15, 2020

Gamay is a red grape variety best known for producing the wines of Beaujolais in eastern France. It thrives in granite-rich soils and cooler climates, which help to highlight its fresh, fruity character. Often vinified using carbonic maceration, Gamay yields wines that are light-bodied, aromatic, and low in tannin. While commonly associated with youthful, easy-drinking wines like Beaujolais Nouveau, Gamay can also produce more structured, age-worthy expressions in the Cru villages of Beaujolais.

Flavor

Gamay wines are known for their vibrant flavors of red berries—especially strawberry, cherry, and raspberry—along with floral notes like violet and hints of banana or bubblegum in younger styles. They tend to be bright and juicy with lively acidity and a soft, silky mouthfeel.

Food Pairing

Gamay pairs well with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled salmon, and vegetable dishes. Its light body and fresh acidity also make it a great match for picnic fare, creamy cheeses, and dishes with earthy components like mushrooms or lentils.
