Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- powdered sugar or frosting for topping
Recipe:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9×9-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg, followed by the molasses and vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with hot water, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar or spread with your preferred frosting before serving.
