Hakama (袴) is a traditional Japanese garment in the form of the skirt-like pants, being an integral part of men’s traditional attire, complementing the kimono.

Introduced during the Heian period (794-1185), hakama initially served as a form of horseback riding wear for the samurai class. Over time, it evolved into a symbol of status and was adopted as formal wear, especially for ceremonies and martial arts practices. Hakama consists of wide, pleated trousers that fall to the ankles, creating a flowing and dignified appearance. The garment is secured at the waist with a series of ties, and its design varies based on the occasion and the wearer’s social standing.
