Juban (襦袢) is an essential garment in traditional Japanese attire, specifically designed to be worn as an undershirt beneath the kimono. Juban serves multiple purposes, providing a barrier between the body and the outer silk layers of the kimono to protect it from oils and perspiration. Additionally, it adds an extra layer for modesty and warmth. The term “Juban” itself is derived from the Japanese words “ju” meaning under or beneath and “ban” meaning half or part, aptly describing its role as the foundational undergarment for the kimono ensemble.
