Kanmuri

Kanmuri () is a traditional Japanese hat worn by nobles and high-ranking officials during the Heian period (794-1185). It is typically made of lacquered silk and features a distinctive upright tail at the back. The hat’s design symbolized the wearer’s social status and was an integral part of court attire. Its origins trace back to ancient Chinese court hats, reflecting the cultural exchanges between Japan and China during that era. Today, the kanmuri is still worn in certain Shinto rituals and by participants in historical reenactments.
