Epaulettes (fr. épaule – shoulder) were originally used as a shoulder decoration, bearing the military distinctive features and protecting the shoulders from sabers. Nowadays, some armies still use it as part of their parade uniforms. Simply put, epaulette is a shoulder strap with stripes and fringe. In modern fashion — epaulettes are widely used as decorative elements in jackets and trench coats.
