Lycra

June 4, 2023

Lycra is a highly elastic synthetic fabric which can stretch up to 5-8 times its original size. Also known under the name spandex (in the US) and elastane (in Europe).

Lycra was originally developed by DuPont Corporation in the 1950s, using the earlier developments made by the German company IG Farben in the 1930s, which invented polyurethane.

Lycra is most often added to other fabrics in various ratios. As little as 2% is enough to change the characteristics of the fabric towards a greater elasticity and wear-resistance.
