Zinfandel
September 7, 2023
Zinfandel [zin-fan-dell] is a variety of black-skinned wine grape, which DNA leads the genetic resemblance to the earlier grape varieties — Crljenak Kaštelanski from Croatia and Tribidrag (also known as Primitivo) in Italy. The grape found its way to the United States in the middle of the 19th century, mostly being grown in California now.
Flavors
The taste of Zinfandel wine depends on the ripeness of the grapes: red berry fruit flavors, such as raspberry prevail in wines from cold regions, while blackberry, anise and pepper notes are more commonly noticed in wines made in warm regions.
Food Pairing
Zinfandel wine pairs well with barbecue, Thanksgiving turkey, meat-topped pizza, pasta with meatballs and tomato sauce, black beans.
