5 Foods That Cause Your Face to Swell in the Morning

October 13, 2020

In order to wake up in the morning without puffiness under the eyes, it’s important not to drink a lot of fluids before bedtime, as well as to refuse some specific foods.

Very often, when we wake up with swelling under our eyes or face, we don’t think about the fact that certain foods eaten at the wrong time can provoke the accumulation of fluid in the body. To avoid this, we recommend you to pay attention to what your dinner consists of. It’s important to know the list of foods which lead to water retention in the body in order to avoid this problem.

The editorial team of The Fashiongton Post has prepared for you the list of foods that provoke swelling, which we advise to eat only in the morning or during the daytime, if you can’t refuse this food at all:

Wheat bread and flour products

Gluten in breads and white flour products can be one of the main causes of facial swelling. Scientists have even come up with a definition for this condition — the ‘gluten face’. Therefore, be careful about how much bread and when exactly you eat it. Try cutting out wheat products at least in the evening. You will notice that in the morning you will no longer see a swollen face in the mirror.

Fresh tomatoes

face swelling

This vegetable belongs to the nightshade family, which means that it contains solanine, and in rather high doses. Solanine causes inflammation in the mucous membranes, which also affects the face. If you eat a lot of fresh tomatoes in the evening, then swelling under the eyes in the morning cannot be avoided.

Eggplant

eyes swell

These tasty vegetables, which are included in various diet plans, can also cause swelling. Same as tomatoes, they belong to the nightshade family and contain solanine too. It makes sense to refuse canned and pickled eggplants, however, when cooked, solanine is no longer that harmful.

Sugar

Too much sugar in the diet can cause the elastic collagen fibers in our skin to become stiff and inflexible. Along with saggy skin, sugar increases insulin levels and retains water in the body. As a result, the face looks swollen the very next morning after eating foods containing sugar. Cut out sugar-containing foods and you will notice the difference.

Dairy

puffy foods

Whole milk, cream, hard cheese, kefir — all these products provoke inflammation in our body and lead to swelling of the face. So, a glass of milk at night is not a good idea. But this doesn’t mean you need to completely abandon all dairy products. You can drink goat milk or eat lactose-free dairy products. Yoghurts and fermented cheese are also considered to be relatively harmless because they contain probiotics which are very beneficial bacterias that regulate the gut.
